Vibe coding is one of the most talked-about shifts in how software gets built in 2026 — describing what you want to an AI coding assistant in plain language and accepting what it generates, often without reading every line. It's a genuinely useful way to move fast. It's also becoming a genuinely common way to end up with a fragile, insecure product once real users show up.
For exploring an idea — testing whether a feature makes sense, building a demo for investors, validating a UX flow — vibe coding is a legitimate speed advantage. AI coding assistants are genuinely good at producing working code fast for well-understood, common patterns, and studies on developer productivity back this up: teams using AI coding assistants complete tasks meaningfully faster and merge more pull requests than those who don't. The prototype stage is exactly where that speed advantage matters most and the downside risk is lowest.
AI coding assistants tend to generate the simplest working version of a feature unless explicitly instructed otherwise — which often means missing input validation, hardcoded or exposed credentials, and default configurations that prioritize "it runs" over "it's safe." These gaps are invisible in a demo and very visible the first time someone probes a live product maliciously.
Prototype-grade database schemas often skip proper constraints, indexes, and migration planning because the prototype only ever ran against a handful of test records. Once real user data starts accumulating, the absence of that structure surfaces as corrupted records, slow queries, and painful, risky migrations to fix retroactively.
AI-generated code optimized for "does this work" rather than "does this scale" is common, because the assistant has no visibility into your actual expected load. This is the same failure mode we cover in our MVP development guide — it's fine to defer scalability engineering deliberately, but it needs to be a deliberate, known tradeoff, not an accidental one baked in by default.
The subtler risk: when code is generated faster than it's reviewed, the team building on top of it often doesn't fully understand how it works. That's fine until something breaks in production and no one can quickly diagnose why — because no human ever built a mental model of that logic in the first place.
The point isn't to avoid AI-assisted coding
AI coding assistants are a legitimate part of how software gets built now, including on our own team. The point is treating the prototype-to-production transition as a real engineering step with its own review process — the same way you'd review any code before it handles real users and real money, regardless of who or what wrote it first.
