• The model generates its response grounded in that retrieved content, rather than guessing from general training knowledge alone

RAG vs. Fine-Tuning: Which One Do You Actually Need

Fine-tuning retrains the model itself on your data — expensive, slow to update, and surprisingly unreliable for exact facts, since the model is learning patterns and style, not memorizing specific answers precisely. RAG instead keeps the model unchanged and retrieves the exact relevant source content at query time, which is far cheaper, updates instantly whenever your underlying documents change, and produces answers that can be traced directly back to a specific source document — important for compliance and trust. For most business knowledge-base use cases, RAG is the more practical and maintainable choice.

Where RAG Works Well, and Where It Doesn't

RAG is strong for document-heavy, semantically searchable content — internal wikis, contracts, product manuals, support history. It's a weaker fit for highly structured, numeric, relational data like detailed financial reporting, where a direct database query or a properly built API integration (often via Model Context Protocol) is usually more accurate and reliable than semantic retrieval.
