Building GIS and Geospatial Software: Engineering Challenges Most Teams Underestimate

Geospatial software has a deceptive reputation. From the outside, it looks like "just maps and data points" — plot some coordinates, add a few layers, done. In practice, it's one of the areas of software engineering where the gap between a working prototype and a production-grade system is unusually wide. Coordinate Systems Are a Silent Source of Bugs

Every geospatial dataset has a coordinate reference system (CRS) — a way of mapping real-world locations to numbers. The problem is that different data sources often use different CRSs, and mixing them without proper transformation produces data that looks fine on a small map but is subtly, sometimes significantly, wrong. A dataset in WGS84 plotted as if it were in a projected coordinate system can be off by kilometers. This is one of the most common silent bugs in geospatial software — everything renders, nothing errors, but the data is wrong.

Raster Data at Scale Breaks Naive Approaches

Satellite and drone imagery (raster data) gets large fast — a single high-resolution orthomosaic can be gigabytes. Loading an entire raster file into memory to process or render it works in a demo and fails in production. Real systems use tiling and pyramiding — pre-processing imagery into multiple resolution levels so the system only loads the detail needed for the current zoom level, rather than the entire dataset every time.

Spatial Queries Need Spatial Indexes

A query like "find all points within this polygon" or "find the nearest feature to this location" is trivial to write incorrectly and painful to run at scale without proper spatial indexing. We use PostGIS with GiST indexes for exactly this reason — spatial queries that would otherwise scan an entire table become fast, indexed lookups. Skipping this is fine for a prototype with a few hundred records and catastrophic once real data volume shows up.

Computer Vision on Geospatial Imagery Has Its Own Rules

Running object detection or classification models on satellite or drone imagery isn't quite the same problem as standard computer vision. Objects appear at inconsistent scales depending on flight altitude or satellite resolution, lighting and seasonal conditions vary dramatically across capture dates, and ground-truth validation is harder to get than in typical CV domains where you can visually verify results easily. Models need to be trained and validated specifically against the imagery conditions they'll actually see in production, not generic image datasets.

Multi-Temporal Data Adds Another Layer of Complexity

Many geospatial use cases need to track change over time — is this area growing or shrinking, is this feature the same one that was there last season. That requires consistent feature identification across multiple imagery captures, which is straightforward when nothing moves and genuinely difficult when boundaries shift, resolution changes, or capture angles differ between time periods.

What This Means If You're Evaluating a GIS Build

• Ask specifically about coordinate reference system handling — vague answers here predict data accuracy problems later
• Ask how the system handles raster data at scale, not just in a demo with a small sample file
• Confirm the database layer uses proper spatial indexing (PostGIS or equivalent), not a generic relational setup
• If computer vision is involved, ask how the model was validated against your specific imagery conditions
• Budget realistically — geospatial systems with imagery processing cost meaningfully more than a standard web application of similar visible complexity
