Why Monitoring Design Decides Project Viability

Monitoring cost scales with the precision the methodology demands. Traditional forestry monitoring uses sample plots — physically measuring trees in representative areas and extrapolating. That is labour-intensive, and for large or dispersed project areas the field cost can consume a substantial share of credit revenue.

Remote sensing changes that arithmetic. Drone photogrammetry and satellite imagery combined with AI-based tree detection allow measurement across the full project area rather than sampled plots, at a fraction of the recurring field cost. Crediting periods of twenty to forty years create requirements most software projects never confront. The system needs to produce, decades from now, the original baseline documentation and every intervening monitoring record, in a form an auditor can follow.
